The Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site on 26th June 2009 for their exceptional geology and landscapes.

Italy has more sites inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage List than any other country. Out of a total of 879 properties, 44 are in Italy and only 2 of these are natural: the Isole Eolie (Aeolian Islands) and now also the Dolomites.

"We have been entrusted with this heritage, and this knowledge means that we are directly committed to taking responsibility for this heritage and guarantees us a more aware and sustainable form of tourism. A form of tourism that must combine nature and culture, including the way of life, the way traditional local produce is produced, sold in-situ and eaten. We cannot compete with the Alps, the Padan Plain or those of Holland, Germany or Argentina when it comes to the production of meat. Not even if you live in a World Heritage site."

(Reinhold Messner - mountaineer and king of the Eight-Thousanders)
